FLASH SCOUTING REPORT:
Good athlete... well-proportioned build... underclassman (junior) entering the draft early... smooth in movements but with urgency in his step... good burst off snap... excellent feet, active and efficient footwork... underrated router showing sharp breaks without loss of speed... doesn’t round-off routes like most TEs... will cut hard, creating quick separation from covering LBs... not fast, but quick... runs with an idea and purpose, with and without the football in-hand... very good blocker for run and pass-pro... gets to his assignments and sticks it... squares pads and takes on blocks... sticky hands upon arrival of football... gets arms extended and hands square... good ball technique... can surprise defenders with breakaway burst if he gets a step on a LB... though not track-fast, Hurst will hit his top gear in a step, and that creates good game-speed... back in 2012 Hurst was drafted by Pitt Pirates and played pitcher and 1st-base in minors... “retired” from baseball to attend South Carolina and focus on football... enters 2018 NFL draft as a 25-year-old rookie.
FANTASY BREAKDOWN and STRAIGHT TALK:
Watching Hayden Hurst’s game cut-ups, it is clear he is an athlete and not just a bulked-up wideout or under-nourished O-lineman. Hurst has impressively quick feet, runs routes and assignments with smart footwork and purpose. Playing baseball helped Hurst refine his hands and it shows catching the football. He won’t time very well in his workout dashes, but in live action the South Carolina TE is plenty fast to complete his plays and do them well. He gets into his routes quickly, breaks sharply (almost WR-like), and has the wheels to take a LB by surprise with a burst if he gets a step or 2 behind the coverage. An athlete like Hurst can string together 40-60 catch NFL seasons for 5-7 seasons.
The Straight Talk: Far too often we look at a prospect’s numbers and form lasting opinions of a player from that; not always a good idea. Hayden Hurst shows decent productivity in his receptions, yards and YPR but scored just 3 total TDs receiving over his 3-seasons at South Carolina. Yeah, nix that column when judging Hurst. If you watched QB play lately at SoCar, you’d toss Hurst a Mulligan there. TE is a tough position to break into as a pro, and Hurst has his work cut out for him, being a 25-year-old rookie. But he has darn impressive game tape with and without the football, and pro personnel folks will note his keen footwork and routing skills. His best football is just ahead.
